IAEA sees no reasons not to operate Belarusian nuclear power plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency sees no reasons that the Belarusian nuclear power plant should not be used. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi made the statement as he delivered a speech in the European Parliament remotely, BelTA has learned.

In response to a question of the Lithuanian member of the European Parliament Petras Austrevicius, the IAEA director general said: “We’ve found both good practices and something that needs to be improved. But I would like to say a very important thing. We’ve found no reason that this nuclear power plant should not be operated.”

Rafael Mariano Grossi noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency has been cooperating with Belarus for a long time. “We provide expert evaluation services and consulting services. European experts have worked in Belarus,” he pointed out.

In his words, the International Atomic Energy Agency will continue working in Belarus for the sake of ensuring nuclear safety.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using the Russian design AES-2006 featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW.
